Learn Something New

We offer individual taster events to give you a chance to try something different. It is sometimes one meeting, sometimes a short course and sometimes it becomes a group. It's up to you but why not just try?

When we have a new activity to offer you it will be advertised on this page and in the newsletter. Places are often limited, so keep an eye out for Learn Something New and apply early if you are interested.

If you have an idea for a session, or a skill you could share with members, please contact me to let me know.

Hand-bell Ringing

Recently we were very lucky to be able to offer our members a chance to try playing hand-bells. We were all complete beginners but keen to try something different.

After just three sessions under the excellent tuition of our leader, Alison, we put on a short performance of Christmas songs at our u3a Christmas Meeting. We played with lots of enthusiasm and our appreciative audience joined in to sing with gusto too. It was great fun for everyone!

If you are interested in trying too, a new group learning to play hand-bells is starting in January. You can find full details and how to apply to join on this page - Hand-bells

These are some of our previous LSN Sessions

Learn to Crochet a Granny Square
A granny square blanket is a traditional way of using oddments of wool. It uses just two different stitches which are not difficult to master. The challenge is in finding a way to hold the wool to regulate the tension. We spent a very enjoyable afternoon trying to develop the skill, fortified by cake!

Cathedral Window Pincushion
We followed a WI pattern to make a small pincushion with this classic English design. We didn't quite get it finished in the session but everyone was very pleased with what they had produced and could finish it at home.

Sashiko Workshop
Sashiko comes from the country stitching style of northern Japan. In this workshop we all had great fun trying this style of Japanese embroidery which was new for all of us

Pickleball
We ran two taster courses for people interested in trying Pickleball. They were very successful and we now have a Pickleball group ,

Folded Fabric Star
This was very popular and we had a full class. Everyone enjoyed learning how to make a folded star with paper and then successfully made one or more fabric stars to add to their Christmas decorations.

Gem Painting
The group enjoyed trying a new craft. Everyone worked hard to complete a gem painted coaster to take home. The results were sparkling! Two of the group have taken up gem painting as a new hobby for the long winter evenings.
